Abstract

The aims of this mixed method research (quantitative and qualitative) together with quasi-experimental research were: 1) to study the behaviors in preventing oneself from drugs and all vices of the students in The Drug-Free Schools Project at Opportunity Expansion Schools Nonghan District Udonthani Province 2) to study the model of learner development in the aforesaid project; 3) to compare the behaviors in in preventing oneself from drugs and all vices of the foresaid students. The research population was 1,419 Mattayomsuksa 1-3 students in the Educational Opportunity Extension Schools in the research area, 306 of them were selected by means of Krejcie & Morgan method as the quantitative samples and 9 of experts and stakeholders of the Drug-Free Schools Project by Buddhist Integration’ were selected by purposive sampling as the key informants in the qualitative research. 90 of those were selected as the quasi-experimental research samples. The research tools used in this study included 1)
a questionnaire (360 sets) surveying the samples’ opinions on the behaviors in preventing oneself from drugs and all vices of the students in the ‘Drug-Free School project by Buddhist Integration’ at Opportunity Extension Schools; 2) an interview form used to ask the mentioned key informants about the foresaid model; 3) the program of Buddhist integrative training camp of life skills. The obtained data were analyzed by the following statistics: Percentage, Mean, Standard Deviation, t-test (Dependent Samples) and the statistical significance level at 0.05 was set for this study.

The research results were as follows:

1) The overall mean score of the students behaviors in preventing oneself from drugs and all vices of the students in the Drug-Free School Project by Buddhist at Opportunity Extension Schools was at the moderate level ( = 2.63).

2) The model of learner development in the aforesaid project is the program of Buddhist integrative training camp of life skills consisting of 8 stages: 1) building faith and trust, 2) proposal of problems and questions, 3) observation, 4) exploration and touching, 5) investigation, 6) wisdom cultivation, 7) summery and evaluation and
8) application.

3) Evaluated before attaining the development, the comparative results of the study on the student behaviors in preventing oneself from drugs and all vices of the students in the aspects of physical development (kāya-bhāvanā), social skills (sīla-bhāvanā), mental aspect (citta-bhāvanā) shows the mean score at 41.11 while that of after participation in the development was 83.38, increasing by 42.27. The mean achievement score in the wisdom development aspect (paññā-bhāvanā) after the experiment was higher than that of pre-experiment at the statistical significance level of 0.05; this indicates that the model of learner development in the aforesaid project in the research region is able to effectively develop the behaviors of the students to avoid drugs and all vices.
